Broadband policy 'before Christmas'

Tuesday, September 28, 2010
The government will announce its policy on delivering broadband to all homes in the UK before Christmas, Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt has said.
As well as laying foundations for next generation superfast broadband, the government's policy will solve the "big question" of how to deal with homes that do not have access to any broadband, or broadband at a reasonable speed Hunt told the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee.
He said: "There are 160,000 homes-predominantly in rural and remote areas-that do not have access to broadband at all. There are over 9 million adults who have never used the internet, as compared with 30 million who use it every day. So it is a very important tool of social policy."
He added: "We are doing everything we can because our broadband policy is one of the most important things that we will be doing, as a department to contribute to the government's economic growth strategy."
The government has pledged to deliver at least 2Mbps to every household in the UK before the end of this parliament.
This has been delayed from previous commitments to achieving universal 2Mbps by 2012.
